MULTAN (Web Desk) – Following the footsteps of campaigner Alamgir Khan, whose ‘Fix it’ campaign to cover unsealed manholes in the metropolis gained popularity on social media, a nazim in Multan was arrested on Thursday by police as he attempted to create a “symbolic garbage dump” outside the District Coordination Office, the headquarters of the district administration.
Saleem Ullah Khan of UC 35 was on board a tractor and moving towards the DCO Office, where several state building are located, when the security personnel blocked the vehicle from entering the DCO Office. Khan, however, dumped the garbage at the main gate of DCO Office.
He was arrested by police on Thursday at the behest of DCO Multan. Later in the afternoon, a First Information Report (FIR) No. 27/2016 was registered against Khan at the Civil Lines police station for ‘disrupting traffic’ and ‘littering outside the DCO Office’ under section 341 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
“Several complaints were made to the DCO office and Waste Management authorities but to no avail. I have dumped this garbage here so that the authorities concerned wake to the issue of poor cleanliness conditions in the land of Sufi saints, Multan,” Khan had told the media before he was arrested.
“I am doing this so that they [the administration] can also smell the odour, and they also fall sick from the poor hygiene that the rest of us are suffering,” he explained.
