DHAKA (Web Desk) – Bangladesh is planning to ban the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), the country’s biggest Islamist party, Bangladesh Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Huq said on Monday, according to local media reports.
“A bill would be placed in the ongoing parliament session to ban the politics of JI, the party accused of committing crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War,” the minister said during the current Assembly Session.
“Jamaat-e-Islami is a war criminal party because they opposed the Liberation War as a party. They do not have any right to do politics in the country. There is no alternative way except banning them. Law minister has informed me that the bill on banning Jamaat politics will be tabled this session,” he said.
Taking part in the budget session, the minister said: “The freedom fighters risked their lives in the war. Eid is ahead. Everyone will get the festival bonus but freedom fighters would not get any bonus. Freedom fighters demanded to introduce two special allowances on March 26 and December 16,” Huq added.
Moreover, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Alim has said Pakistan is admitting to its role in the 1971 genocide by backing the war criminals put on trial.
“Pakistan has been consistently protesting since Bangladesh executed its first war crimes verdict by hanging Abdul Quader Molla or ‘Butcher of Mirpur’ in 2013”, Mahmood Ali explained.
