Punjab govt imposes Section 144, bans gathering of four or more people

LAHORE – The Punjab government on Saturday imposed Section 144, banning gathering of four or more people across the province ahead of a planned march of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on November 2.

According to a notification issued by the Home Department, violators of the ban will be dealt with strictly.

The ban will come into effect from midnight today and remain valid till November 7.

Earlier, the federal government on Thursday imposed Section 144 with immediate effect banning political meetings, rallies and protests in Islamabad.

The ban will remain in force for at least two months, said the Federal Ministry of Interior in a statement.

After the imposition of Section 144, police in a crackdown on PTI youth convention in Islamabad on Thursday arrested over one hundred activists for violation of the rule.
