SANAA (Web Desk) – As many as 160 people have been killed and over 500 injured in air strikes on a funeral gathering in Yemen’s capital Sanaa on Saturday, a senior UN official confirmed.
Spokesman of the health ministry in Sanaa, Tamim al-Shami maintained that over 500 individuals have been left injured in the incident as the airstrike targeted mourners at around 3.30 P.M who were present inside Grand Hall .
The attack is being termed as the deadliest one in recent past although the country is braving long-standing civil conflict. The Huthi rebels have blamed the attack on the Saudi-led coalition although it gainsays any such move.
Moreover, the Obama administration said it had launched an “immediate review” of its already reduced support for the coalition.
The UN humanitarian coordinator in Yemen, Jamie McGoldrick, said aid workers were “shocked and outraged” by the attacks that hit a community hall in the capital Sanaa where mourners had gathered.
He called for an immediate investigation and said the international community must exert pressure to ensure civilians are protected.
“This violence against civilians in Yemen must stop immediately,” said McGoldrick.
