LAHORE – The operator of Lahore Metro Bus Service (LMBS), VEDA, issued a final notice to the Punjab Mass Transit Authority (PMA), warning that bus operations will be suspended from August 11, 2026, if fuel supplies are not immediately arranged.
A letter to MD Punjab Masstransit Authority, VEDA said it had exhausted its financial resources and was no longer in a position to continue running the Metro Bus Service without fuel funding. The warning comes amid dispute over the implementation of a court order dated July 29, 2026, under which PMA was required to provide fuel from its own sources.
VEDA said it had already written to PMA on July 31 and August 4, but received no response to either communication.
The issue was also discussed during a meeting between VEDA and PMA representatives on August 6, where VEDA reiterated that it had run out of financial capacity to sustain operations. PMA maintained that it could not take a decision without explicit directions from the Punjab government.
The meeting ended with an understanding that PMA would propose a solution, but VEDA said no solution or financial arrangement had been communicated to it so far.
In its final notice, VEDA made it clear that it would not be able to continue operations unless PMA immediately started providing an uninterrupted fuel supply from its own resources. “Accordingly, unless PMA immediately commences the uninterrupted supply of fuel from its own sources, in compliance with the attached Court order, VEDA will be unable to continue operations,” the company said.
VEDA further announced that all Lahore Metro Bus Service operations would stand suspended with effect from August 11, 2026.
The operator has also sought to make it clear that any suspension would not be its responsibility. It said the shutdown would result solely from PMA’s failure to implement the court order, adding that it would not amount to any fault, default or unwillingness on the part of the operator.
The company also reserved its contractual, legal and arbitration rights and remedies, signaling that the funding dispute could potentially escalate into a wider legal battle.
The threatened suspension could create serious difficulties for commuters who rely on the Lahore Metro Bus Service for daily travel. The dispute placed Punjab government and the Punjab Masstransit Authority under mounting pressure to resolve the funding issue before the deadline.
If no arrangement is reached by August 11, Lahore could face major public transport disruption as the Metro Bus Service operator prepares to pull its buses off the roads.
