Mass funeral held for 125 unidentified Bahawalpur oil tanker fire victims

BAHAWALPUR – A mass funeral was held for 125 unidentified victims of the Bahawalpur oil tanker explosion on Tuesday. The bodies were buried in numbered graves by the district administration.

The administration said that DNA samples of the victims have been taken and will be matched by those of their relatives to ascertain the identities of numbered graves.

The relatives will be allowed to rebury their loved ones at a place of their choosing once they are identified.

The mass funeral was held only for the 125 unidentified victims while those who could be identified had been handed over to their relatives.

Death toll reaches 159: 

Meanwhile, the death toll from the tragic incident rose to 159 on Tuesday evening, after another injured of the incident succumbed to his wounds.

According to health sources, 126 people were killed on the spot while 33 died later during treatment within two days after the crashed oil tanker caught fire Sunday morning in Bahawalpur’s Ahmedpur East tehsil.

Oil tanker driver surrenders to police: 

The police also registered a case against the driver, owner and manager of the oil tanker.

Following the registration of the case at Saddar police station, the driver surrendered himself to the police after which he was taken to an undisclosed location for questioning. The driver has been identified as Gul Mohammad.
