Ishaq Dar challenges indictment in Islamabad High Court

ISLAMABAD – The embattled Finance Minister Ishaq Dar challenged his indictment by an accountability court in a corruption reference, in the Islamabad High Court on Monday.

The close confidant of Sharif family stated in his petition that he was indicted by the accountability court without being given the mandated time, requesting the IHC to suspend the indictment proceedings till he submitted his response.

The corruption reference, pertaining to Dar’s assets beyond his means, was filed by the National Accountability Bureau in the purview of July 28th verdict of the Supreme Court.

Dar was indicted by the accountability court on Wednesday after his counsel’s request for a grant of seven days was denied by the court, remarking that the trial needed to be wrapped up in six months, in line with the directives of top court.

“If you take a month to read the reference how will we wrap up proceedings in the given time?” the judge asked, observing further that two days are enough to go over the reference.

The judge observed that they would conduct daily hearings in the case and also directed Dar to deposit a Rs5 million surety bond to ensure his appearance at the hearings.

Moreover, former premier Nawaz Sharif’s indictment was postponed on Monday (today) as his children and son-in-law did not show up.

The accountability court Judge Muhammad Bashir directed that Nawaz Sharif would be tried separately provided the other accused, Hassan, Hussain, Maryam and Captain Safdar fail to appear before the court on October 9th.
