India test fires Agni-5 ballistic missile with 5000km strike range

NEW DELHI – India claimed Sunday to have successfully tested its nuclear capable long range ballistic missile Agni-5 with a strike range of 5,000 km, off the coast of the eastern Indian state of Odisha.

The surface-to-surface missile was fired by a mobile launcher from a platform located on Doctor Abdul Kalam Island, in the Bay of Bengal, at 9:48 local time, defense officials told The Times of India.

This was the sixth trial of the Agni-5 ballistic missile, which covered its full distance during the test.

Unlike other missiles in the series, Agni-5 is the most advanced with new technologies in terms of navigation and guidance, warheads and engines, said a Research and Development Organization official.

The flight performance was tracked and monitored by radars, tracking instruments and observation stations all through the mission, the portal added.

Several technologies developed in the country were successfully tested in the Agni-5 test.

The navigation systems made it possible to reach the objective with a few meters of accuracy, explained the official.

A high-speed on-board computer and fault-tolerant software along with a robust and reliable bus guided the missile without problems.
