LAHORE – A unit of Punjab Police’s Dolphin Force shot dead a mentally challenged youth in Lahore’s Sabzazar area, according to reports in local media on Saturday.
The incident occurred in Lahore’s Sabzazar area, where Dolphin Force personnel shot the youth, Umair, in the chest and leg. The young man was reportedly threatening the passersby with a knife.
In a video shared on social media, Umair can be seen attacking the Dolphin personnel with the knife.
Police said the Dolphin squad tried to disarm the youth by aerial firing, but to no avail. Four other citizens also sustained injuries from the knife attack, according to reports.
Umair’s family said he was mentally challenged and suffered from epilepsy. His body was shifted to the Jinnah Hospital.
Alleging the police personnel of deliberately targeting the deceased, the family of the deceased protested with his body near Babu Sabu Interchange and blocked Ring Road for traffic.
Meanwhile, police apprehended two members of the Dolphin Force and began investigating the matter.
Deputy inspector general (DIG) Operations has sought a report on the incident from SP Iqbal Town.
