MPAs take oath in maiden Punjab Assembly session

LAHORE – The Punjab Assembly is holding its inaugural session today wherein the newly elected lawmakers took the oath of their office.

Former Speaker Punjab Assembly, Rana Muhammad Iqbal, administered the oath to the lawmakers-elect. Interestingly, the former interior minister Chaudhry Nisar did not show up before the house.

The Speaker and Deputy Speaker will be elected from within the assembly. The chief minister will then be chosen for which the political parties have started jockeying.

Hamza Shehbaz has been nominated by the majority party, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) for the position of chief minister. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf which holds 122 seats in the House has bagged the support of independent candidates against PML-N’s 127 seats.

However, the party has not nominated its candidate for the slot of Chief Minister.

Both PML-N and PTI have been toiling hard to secure as many seats as possible in order to form a government in the province, however, the Imran Khan-led party claims to secure a majority in the house.
