Sindh High Court stops municipal, UC elections in certain constituencies

KARACHI (Web Desk) – The Sindh High Court on Tuesday stayed municipal committee elections from being held in certain constituencies of the province while hearing a petition against the Election Commission of Pakistan, filed by independent candidate Shehryar Mahr.

According to the petition submitted before the court, the ECP is depriving independent candidates in Badin district from contesting elections for municipal committee seats, while allowing candidates of different political parties to contest these seats.

The petitioner also claimed that the ECP had allowed independent candidates in Badin, where all Local Government seats were won by independent candidates, to contest union council elections while rejecting the nomination papers of independent candidates contesting municipal committee seats.

A 2-member bench of the Sindh High Court, led by Justice Nadeem Akhtar, has halted said elections until a final verdict on the matter is passed.
