Sharjeel Memon resigns from Sindh PAC

KARACHI – Pakistan Peoples Party Leader Sharjeel Memon who was elected member of the Sindh Public Accounts Committee (PAC), forwarded a resignation letter and excused being a part of the body, citing a National Accountability Bureau (NAB) trial faced by him.

According to a March 19 notification, seven Sindh Assembly members were declared elected to the committee which include Ghulam Qadir Chandio, Faryal Talpur, Sharjeel Inam Memon, Mohammad Qasim Soomro, Abdul Karim Soomro, Syed Farukh Ahmed Shah and Ghanwer Ali Khan Isran.

However, Memon decided to stay away from the committee and forwarded a resignation letter.

“Though as an MPA it is a matter of great honour for me that I have been elected to be a member of such an august committee […] in the present circumstances, facing a NAB trial, I feel that I will not be in a position to discharge my duties as Member, PAC,” Memon stated in the letter.

Faryal Talpur, PPP co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari’s sister, is also facing a mega-money laundering case and is on a bail from the Sindh High Court but she is still a part of the committee with no hints to step down.

Sharjeel Inam Memon is accused of embezzling almost Rs6 billion while heading Sindh’s Information Department.

According to a NAB reference, a probe was conducted and corrupt practices were unearthed in the award of advertisements to television and FM radio channels.

The accountability watchdog says between July 2013 and June 2015, an amount of Rs5.76 billion was paid to seven advertisement agencies.

Sharjeel Inam Memon was also arrested in October 2017 by a NAB team after the Sindh High Court (SHC) rejected his bail plea in the same case.

An accountability court in Karachi indicted Sharjeel Memon and 11 others in the same case in February last year.

The PPP leader is also facing a separate reference about illegal adjustment and consolidation of hundreds of acres of land in favour of a private housing project.
