Top Pakistani court constitutes larger bench to determine definition of terrorism

ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court of Pakistan has constituted larger bench to determine definition of terrorism.

A larger bench comprising 7 members and presided over by the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Asif Saeed Khosa has been constituted to give decision on the definition of terrorism.

CJP Khosa remarked “it has not been decided since 1997 what case comes in the ambit of terrorism while decision will be announced today on the legal status of false evidence”.

The chief justice also decided Wednesday that the entire evidence of false witness will be rejected.

According to legal experts there is no precise or widely accepted definition of the word, ‘terrorism’. It often refers to and is applied to a variety of acts of violence, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims.

To define what is terrorism leads to an intellectual struggle. The rival parties label the activities of their opponents with it.

The features of an act of terrorism include the use or threat of violence and political motivation for some specific purpose.
