Independent candidate commits suicide in Faisalabad

FAISALABAD – An independent candidate running for both provincial and national assembly has died in an apparent suicide, police in Punjab said on Saturday.

Mirza Muhammad Ahmed Mughal was contesting for the upcoming general elections as an independent candidate from NA-103 and PP-103 constituencies of Faisalabad. He was contesting the polls on the electoral symbol of a pickup truck.

Mughal shot himself after a dispute with his sons and his body was recovered from a graveyard, according to police.

Mughal faced opposition at home as his sons supported candidates from the former ruling party Pakistan Muslim League for both seats.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has postponed the polls in NA-103 and PP-103 after the incident.

Pakistan is set to hold the general elections next Wednesday, July 25.
