ISLAMABAD – The proposed “constitutional package” was put on hold by the PML-N-led ruling coalition as it is yet to woo JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who can play a key role in approval of the amendments in the parliament.
Rehman, whose party claimed not to have the draft of the proposed amendments, is reluctant to throw the weight behind the government’s move for almost 53 amendments in the constitution despite intensive lobbying by the ruling alliance.
The situation forced the government to adjourn the parliament session and cabinet meeting in another bid to convince the opposition.
The government needs crucial votes of JUI to reach the magic number of 224 votes out of 336 in National Assembly and 64 out of 85 in the Senate.
