ISLAMABAD – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir during his official visit to Pakistan, marking his first formal meeting with the military leadership.
According to a statement issued by the Iranian Embassy, the meeting was attended by key officials, including Pakistan’s Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, National Security Advisor Lt General Asim Malik, and the Director General of Military Intelligence.
On the Iranian side, deputy foreign minister, Ambassador of Iran to Pakistan Reza Amiri Moghadam, and spokesperson of the Iranian Foreign Ministry Esmail Baqaei were also present. The discussions are part of ongoing diplomatic and security engagements between the two neighboring countries.
The Iranian foreign minister landed in Pakistan on as he started high-profile regional diplomatic tour, with planned visits to Islamabad, Muscat, and Moscow.
Araghchis’s mission is not routine diplomacy but a critical round of consultations focused on bilateral ties, rapidly unfolding regional developments, and what it describes as the latest situation surrounding the “war imposed by the United States and the Israeli government against Iran.” The timing of the tour comes amid intensifying geopolitical tensions and behind-the-scenes diplomatic maneuvering.
Meanwhile, CNN reports that the United States is preparing a powerful negotiating team for Islamabad, including Trump-era figures Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. According to senior US officials cited by CNN, these envoys are being dispatched specifically for discussions on potential peace talks with Iran.
The report further suggested that US Vice President JD Vance is not currently expected to attend, nor is Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf. However, officials have not ruled out the possibility that Vance could travel to Islamabad if diplomatic progress is made.
