ISLAMABAD – Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Qamar Zaman Chaudhry has said that eradication of corruption is essential for strengthening the country’s economy, while it is also a worldwide phenomenon like terrorism.
Invited as a chief guest, Chairman NAB made these remarks while addressing an anti-corruption seminar titled ‘Role of Youth in Eradication of Corruption’ organised by Higher Education Commission.
“Pakistan’s economy is being affected because of corruption and terrorism,” he said. The chairman stated that corruption is root cause of every evil and it has become one of the greatest challenges of the modern era.
The chairman asserted that youth made 60 per cent of the country’s population, urging them to play role for elimination of corruption from the society.
He said corruption was far more prevalent in developing countries as compared to the developed ones and it was badly affecting society, governance and youth.
He viewed: “Economy and social development of Pakistan have suffered immensely from the detrimental effects of corruption and terrorism”.
“Pakistan’s economy is being affected because of corruption and terrorism,” he said. The chairman stated that corruption is root cause of every evil and it has become one of the greatest challenges of the modern era.
Qamar Zaman said that youth made 60 per cent of the country’s population, urging them to play role for elimination of corruption from the society.
The chairman also urged students to develop zero tolerance for corruption and play their due role in inculcating positive behavior and good deeds in their surroundings. “Students must play a pivotal role in promoting awareness and taking steps for eradication of corruption to make the country prosperous,” said the chairman the added. Chairman NAB said that the anti-corruption bureau has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Higher Education Commission (HEC) for sensitising youth against corruption.
The chairman further that these efforts have started bearing results both at home and abroad. Due to the Bureau’s efforts PILDAT (Pakistan Institute of Legislative Development and Transparency), Transparency International, Mishal and World Economic Forum have appreciated its performance.
“The PILDAT has rated public confidence on NAB as 42%, 29% in police, and 26% have confidence in other Government departments. In its report issued in 2015 by Transparency International Berlin it has placed Pakistan at 117th position out of 175 countries,” he told the audience adding that this has been the best position achieved by Pakistan since Transparency International started issuing its CPI ratings. “I may remind you that in the 2013 CPI Pakistan stand at 134th position.”
