PM Imran appoints special assistant on power sector

ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan has appointed a special assistant on the power sector to develop a plan for resource mobilization to address the mammoth challenge of circular debt in the country.

The Cabinet Division on Friday issued a formal notification for the appointment of Qasim Shahzad as Special Assistant on the Power Sector after Prime Minister Imran Khan approved his appointment.

According to a notification issued, Shahzad Qasim has been tasked to work with the Power Division and Task Force on Energy from Oct 24.

He would develop a plan for resource mobilization for addressing the Circular Debt issue; and a plan for optimum funding of a Power Sector Support Fund in the light of international best practices, while keeping in view the political, economic and social fabric of Pakistan.

Qasim would execute any other initiative, or implement any other policies, as directed by the Prime Minister or the Federal Minister for Power, the notification said.

Though the previous Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government claimed to have brought about an improvement in power production, it still passed on a gigantic circular debt of Rs1.148 trillion to the new government of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which faces a bumpy road ahead.
