SC gives another deadline to arrest Rao Anwar in Naqeebullah Killing case

ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered Sindh Police to arrest suspended SSP Malir Rao Anwar, a key accused in the ‘extrajudicial killing’ of Naqeebullah Mehsud.

A three member-bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar took up the suo motu case against the killing of the Waziristan youth in a ‘staged encounter’ in Karachi.

The apex court also barred media for airing the statements from the absconded officer. The chief justice also ordered all state institutions, including intelligence agencies, to help the police in tracing the suspect.

The chief justice directed the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to approach Interpol to arrest Anwar.

He also warned the absconding officer of initiating contempt proceedings against him on not appearing before the court despite summons.

Sindh Inspector-General of Police Allah Dino Khawaja informed the court that police have requested the department concerned to find the location of Anwar.

IG Sindh during the hearing also presented an inquiry report on Naqeebullah killing case stating “It appeared to be a coordinated fake encounter”.

Encounter

On January 12, a police encounter took place in Shah Latif Town of Karachi under the supervision of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Malir Rao Anwar. During this shoot-out, four alleged members of banned outfit Tahreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) were killed. Amongst these four alleged terrorists was 27-years-old Naseemullah, alias Naqeeb Mehsud.

Ever since his killing, disputed claims have emerged from his family that Naqeeb was abducted on 3rd January and his killing is extrajudicial. These claims have caused a social media uproar.
