ISLAMABAD – An accountability court resumed hearing of corruption cases against members of Sharif family, including former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday.
Judge Mohammad Bashir heard the cases as Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam, and son-in-law Capt (retd) Safdar have reached the court to attend corruption proceedings.
It is to mention here that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) filed three references against Nawaz and his family in light of the Supreme Court’s July 28 judgment in the Panama Papers case.
The three references include the London flats, Al-Azizia Steel Mills and offshore companies including Flagship Investment Ltd.
A prosecution witness, Mohammad Tasleem, who is commissioner Inland Revenue, recorded his statement before the court. Tasleem said that he had appeared before the NAB Rawalpindi and provided details regarding wealth tax paid by Nawaz and his sons – Hasan and Hussain Nawaz – to the authorities.
Nawaz Sharif’s counsel Khawaja Harris cross-examined the witness.
Later, another prosecution witness Zawwar Manzoor recorded his statement and was cross-examined by Harris and Amjad Pervez, the counsel for Maryam and Safdar.
The court has adjourned case until January 9.
A number of PML-N leaders have reached the federal judicial complex to observe the hearing of the cases, while strict security measures have been taken around the court.
Talking to media after attending the hearing outside the accountability court, Nawaz Sharif repeated his claims that judiciary gave favour to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan in the disqualification case.

He added that the court acquitted Imran Khan, who has himself confessed to his wrongdoings. The former premier said that availing amnesty scheme was tantamount to confession to his crime. He said it is yet to be unknown from where Khan had received the money.
Regarding recent bail of Imran Khan by anti-terrorism court, he said: “I would disclose secrets behind his bail”.

The accountability court is hearing three references filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) against Nawaz and his family regarding London flats, Azizia Steel Mills and other companies in the backdrop of the Supreme Court’s verdict in the Panama Papers case.
Nawaz and his two sons, Hussain and Hasan, have been made accused in all three references whereas Maryam and her husband MNA Capt (retd) Safdar are accused in one case regarding London properties.
