MADRID (News Desk) – King Felipe VI of Spain has dissolved the Parliament and called a snap election after legislators chosen in an inconclusive December vote failed to form a new government.
According to the announcement, the King signed decree in presence of parliamentary speaker Patxi López. New parliamentary elections will be held on June 26.
The newly elected parliamentarians will assume their positions on July 19 to officially begin the process of formulation of new government.
King Felipe VI signed the decree in Madrid after the deadline for establishing a new coalition government expired on Monday midnight. Spain has never had to repeat elections since democracy was restored in 1978.
Since the last election, Spain was being administered by a caretaker government led by Mariano Rajoy, who is hopeful to win second term as prime minister.
