Maryam should not prefer her father over country: Firdous

ISLAMABAD – Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan has said Maryam Safdar, the daughter of former PM Nawaz Sharif, should not give preference to his father over the country and the nation.

In a series of tweets Thursday, Awan said Sharif was given sentence under the Constitution and law and Maryam should accept this.

Her tweets came days after Maryam criticised Prime Minister Imran Khan for his “incompetence & sheer ineptitude” to run the country’s affairs as her father did during his time at the top office.

After her father’s detention over Panama Papers leaks, Maryam has emerged as the second most powerful leader of former ruling Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N).

On Tuesday, she slammed the premier when he appreciated the military’s unprecedented voluntary initiative of stringent cuts in their defence expenditures for next fiscal year because of the country’s critical financial situation.

“This tweet is nothing but an admission of your incompetence & sheer ineptitude,” the vice-president of PML-N wrote on her Twitter handle.

“MNS [Muhammad Nawaz Sharif] as PM catered to all the needs of the Armed Forces which included salary increases etc plus purchases for new equipment & development & training which is crucial to their preparedness. This is the difference between competence & incompetence that you personify,” the tweet added.

Imran Khan has announced that his PTI government will spend this money saved on devolution of merged tribal areas and Balochistan.

Last year in July, disgraced premier Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Captain (r) Mohammad Safdar were taken to Adiala jail after they were sentenced to multiple years in prison on corruption charges.

After 68 days of imprisonment, they were released from Adiala prison after the Islamabad High Court suspended their sentences in the Avenfield corruption reference.

While Maryam and her husband do not face any corruption charges, the ex-PM was sentenced to seven years imprisonment on Dec 25 by an accountability court in Islamabad in Al-Azizia Steel Mills case. Nawaz Sharif was also fined Rs1.5 billion and $25 million by the NAB court.

The court also barred him from holding a public office for 10 years after completion of the sentence.

He has since been languishing in Kot Lakhpat jail.
