ISLAMABAD – Justice Munib Akhtar on Tuesday took an oath as a judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar administered the oath in a ceremony held by judges and senior lawyers in Islamabad.
A notification regarding the appointment of Justice Akhtar was issued by the law ministry on Saturday after President Mamnoon Hussain confirmed the appointment of the new judge. A seat in the top court fell vacant following the retirement of Justice Dost Muhammad Khan.
Justice Munib was fourth on the seniority list of Sindh High Court (SHC) judges. In the past, former chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had named incumbent CJP Mian Saqib Nisar and Justice Asif Saeed Khosa ahead of former Lahore High Court CJ Khawaja Muhammad Sharif.
Earlier, CJP Nisar had proposed the elevation of SHC Justice Munib Akhtar as a judge of the Supreme Court.
Justice Akhtar is now in line to become the top judge of Pakistan after the retirement of Justice Mansoor Ali Shah in 2027.
