ISLAMABAD – The administration in Pakistan’s capital city has shut down both internal and external routes of Islamabad city, ahead of the PTI Sangjani rally, and parts of Metrobus station will remain suspended on Sunday.
Security measures have been beefed up as Islamabad police increased patrolling and closed major roads with barricades and containers.
Ahead of Sunday’s power show, Metrobus service between twin cities has been suspended, with operations stopped from Sadar Station to Pak Secretariat to avoid any untoward incident.
Amid broader security measures, police in capital city issued directive ordering closure of all hotels and shops in the vicinity of Sangjani. The police also warned that no support, including shelter or food, should be provided to the rally participants and stated that legal action would be taken against anyone violating these orders.
Imran Khan’s party reported that some of its leaders were held by Islamabad Police at the entrance to the rally venue. Both leaders arrived with party workers and were arrested at a police checkpoint.
Despite the strict measures, PTI members are directed to bring convoys from their local constituencies rather than assembling directly in capital. Leaders from regions including Rawalpindi, Murree, Hazara, Attock, Chakwal, and Jhelum are expected to bring additional supporters to the event.
Khan party members also lamented government’s actions as sign of their fear of PTI’s influence and declared that no effort could stop the party’s show of strength.
