QUETTA – Iranian border forces fired four mortar shells across the border into Balochistan’s Panjgur district on Friday, it has been learnt
A member of the local administration reported the incident. Deputy Commissioner Panjgur Habibur Rehman confirmed firing of mortar shells into Panjgur’s Parom area ‘without any justification and provocation’.
“We have not received any report about any human loss”, he said.
Following the unprovoked aggression, security was beefed up in the province. More security personnel have been sent into the area to guard the border according to the deputy commissioner said.
The firing stirred panic among the locals of Parom and officials in Panjgur lodged a protest with the Iranian border chief pertaining to border violations.
Over the past few years, Pakistan has accused Iranian forces of violating its territorial integrity while registering its protest and concern regarding the unjust aggression.
Pakistan shares a 900-kilometre long porous border with Iran and the two countries had in 2014 decided to boost intelligence coordination to wipe out terrorists from the border region, Dawn News reported.
Pakistan in September, last year also inaugurated Pakistan gate at Taftan (Pak-Iran border).
It is relevant to mention here that this border crossing point was the oldest trade route to Iran and Europe and every year thousands of foreigners and locals travelling by road from Europe and Iran use this crossing point for entry and exit to Pakistan.
As part of counter-terrorism drive, Pakistan also enhanced its border security along with improving border management system, particularly with Afghanistan.
