Chinese investigation team arrives in Karachi after airport attack

KARACHI –  A high-level Chinese investigation team arrived in Karachi to inspect the site of a recent suicide attack that targeted a Chinese delegation and their security convoy near Jinnah International Airport. The attack, which took place on October 6, 2024, left three people dead, including two Chinese nationals, and injured 16 others.

According to official sources, the Chinese team, upon arrival, was briefed by Pakistani investigators on the progress of the investigation. Pakistani officials informed the Chinese delegation that stringent airport security measures had prevented the suicide bomber from bringing his explosives-laden vehicle inside the airport. The attacker detonated the vehicle near a signal outside the airport.

The Chinese investigators carefully examined evidence collected by Pakistani authorities and conducted their own assessment at the site. Although no official statement has been issued regarding their visit, it was reported that they have gathered crucial data to assist in their ongoing investigation.

Sources revealed that human remains found at the scene have been identified as those of the suicide bomber, Shah Fahad. The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) confirmed the identification through fingerprint analysis. Two fingers from the bomber’s left hand provided the match. Other body parts, including the bomber’s torso and fragments of his head, were also recovered.

Investigators are now awaiting the results of forensic reports, including an analysis of the explosive samples collected at the site. This will provide critical information about the type of explosive device used in the attack. Additionally, authorities are expanding their investigation through geo-fencing and call detail record analysis, and several suspects are being interrogated.

The attack, which caused substantial damage to over 15 vehicles, was later claimed by the Baloch Liberation Army’s (BLA) Majeed Brigade through a social media statement. A case has been registered by the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) against the BLA’s chief and those suspected of facilitating the attack.

The incident has drawn significant international attention, especially given the long-standing partnership between Pakistan and China, and their joint infrastructure projects in the region. Both countries have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the safety of Chinese nationals working in Pakistan.
