Dairy farmers stage cow protest in Karachi over milk price

KARACHI – Dairy farmers in Karachi took their cows on roads, as part of a protest over the price they are paid for milk.

The protest was staged in Bhens Colony area of Karachi demanding an increase in the milk price in line with inflation. The urged the administration to fix proper rates and issue a notification in this regard.

The protest came days after Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar imposed a ban on the use of hormones injections to increase cow milk production.

The demonstrators also took their animals to the protest and blocked roads. Slogans demanding price hike were also painted on the bodies of the buffaloes.

The situation turned violent when protester pelted stones on police officials deployed at the site to prevent people from damaging public property. In response, police baton-charged the protester and fired tear shells to disperse them.

As a result, the protesters, who were members of Dairy and Cattle Farmers Association. ran away leaving their animals behind.

A similar protest was also staged in Hyderabad where protesters blocked National Highway for Traffic, demanding an increase in milk price.

Earlier, the farmers in Hyderabad submitted an application to city administration, seeking an increase of Rs15 per litre in the rate. Currently, the retailers are selling milk for Rs85 per litre.
