SC stays election of mayors, deputy mayors in Sindh

ISLAMABAD (Staff Report) – The Supreme Court of Pakistan Wednesday issued a stay order in the case related to election of mayors and deputy mayors in Sindh province, dismissing a petition filed by the Sindh Government.

The Sindh High Court had declared an amendment in the Sindh Local Bodies Act, which replaced secret balloting with a show of hands for electing mayors, as null and void. The provincial government moved SC against SHC order.

In Wednesday’s order the apex court bench ruled that court is keen to hear the case in depth and till then the election of mayors and deputy mayors should not be held. However the bench refused to issue any order against the SHC verdict.

Earlier, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and Pakistan Muslim League-Functional hd challenged the amendment in Local Bodies Act in Sindh High Court.
