Special Parliamentary Committee Okays Constitutional Amendments Draft

ISLAMABAD – The special parliamentary committee on constitutional amendments has approved a draft to be presented at the cabinet meeting tomorrow (Oct 19).

PTI and JUI-F opposed the draft while ANP boycotted the meeting.

Friday’s meeting at Parliament House was attended by key figures including Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, PTI’s Amir Dogar, JUI-F’s Shahida Akhtar Ali, PML-N’s Irfan Siddiqui, MQM’s Aminul Haque, PPP’s Raja Pervez Ashraf, Sherry Rehman, and others.

ANP’s proposed amendment to change the province’s name by removing “Khyber” was dropped, prompting the party’s boycott. Aimal Wali Khan also skipped the meeting.

During the session, PTI’s Amir Dogar emphasized that constitutional amendments are the government’s responsibility. “We are taking risks, some of our members are in hiding. Privacy is being violated, and forced legislation is happening,” he remarked, adding that Maulana Fazlur Rehman supported their position.

The committee eventually approved a joint draft, excluding allied parties’ suggestions. The draft will now go to the cabinet for approval before being presented in the National Assembly and Senate.
