2013 polls fair or not: PTI-govt consensus on judicial commission formation

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and the PML-Nawaz-led government reached a consensus over a four-point agreement on Friday for a probe by a judicial commission into the alleged rigging in the 2013 general elections, said media reports.

Talking to a group of reporters after a meeting between the two sides here, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar said they were thankful to the PTI for showing cooperation. He also thanked members of the jirga which, according to him, helped bring the two sides to an agreement.

Dar, who was heading the government bloc, further said copies of the four-point agreement will also be forwarded to others parties to take them into confidence. The PTI side was led by former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi.

The four-point agreement the two sides reached an agreement on calls for the judicial commission to determine whether or not the 2013 general elections were fair, impartial, transparent and were conducted in accordance with the Constitution; to ascertain if the polls were rigged systematically; and to find out whether or not the elections truly reflects the mandate of the people of Pakistan.

The committees assigned to reach a consensus in this regard have forwarded the final document to PTI chief Imran Khan and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for the approval.

The commission, reports said citing official sources, will complete the investigations into the alleged irregularities in the general elections and identify those responsible. It may also recommend electoral reforms to improve the voting process in the country.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf had staged a four-month long sit in at the Constitutional Avenue in the capital city of Islamabad demanding a probe into the rigging allegations.

A political jirga comprising of leaders from different political parties also played a role in getting the two main groups to agree to a judicial commission.
