The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday dismissed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s petition, which sought to block any potential trial under military laws in cases linked to the May 9 incidents. The petition was disposed of after the government confirmed that no decision on a military trial for the PTI founder had yet been made.
Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb presided over the case, noting that the court could not intervene prematurely without the government’s definitive stance on a military trial.
Additional Attorney General Munawar Iqbal Duggal assured the court that, should the government pursue such a trial, all legal protocols would be strictly followed. This would include seeking approval from a civil magistrate before proceeding.
The petition’s dismissal follows earlier remarks from Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, who indicated that evidence was emerging that could warrant Khan’s trial under military laws. He also hinted that former General Faiz Hameed might attempt to shift responsibility to Khan in these cases.
The May 9 events, marked by violent protests and attacks on military installations, have resulted in numerous arrests and potential military trials for key individuals involved.
