Lt Gen Asim Malik Becomes Isis First Phd Chief Bringing Academic Insight To Leadership

RAWALPINDI – The government of Pakistan appointed Lieutenant-General Muhammad Asim Malik as new head of Inter-Services Intelligence ISI, replacing Nadeem Anjum who is slated to retire this month.

Malik, the new chief of country’s spy agency, becomes the first head of the institution to hold a doctorate (PhD). His doctoral research at National Defence University focused on Pakistan-U.S. ties, providing him with valuable insights into these complex dynamics.

The coveted appointment was approved by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif based on military leadership recommendations.

With extensive experience, including roles as adjutant general at General Headquarters and commanding infantry divisions in Balochistan, Gen Malik has built strong relationships within the military, notably with Chief of Army Staff Gen Asim Munir.

Lt Gen Malik also holds the prestigious Sword of Honor from the Pakistan Military Academy, alongside specialised training in Washington and London. With his appointment, the three-star general will be facing challenges such as allegations of political interference in ISI operations and the security situation in KP and Balochistan.
