LAHORE – Senior member of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and chairman of the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB), Saddique-ul-Farooq has suggested that that the government is willing to give Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif an important position after retirement, such as heading the joint Chiefs of Staff Committee. However, he added that the Army Chief is not likely to accept any such offers.
Gen Raheel Sharif who is set to retire on Nov 30, tweeted in January that he did not plan to get an extension of his term, which, if true, will make him the first Army chief in two decades to retire on time.
Despite his early announcement of retirement, banners urging for his extension or pleading for him to impose martial law have cropped up in different parts Lahore, Islamabad, Karachi and other cities over the past year.
While talking to the press, Saddique also commented on the current political situation saying that Imran Khan was not interested in making a commission for the Panama Leaks investigation because he and his friends also owned off-shore companies.
He also blamed Imran Khan for personally targeting Nawaz Sharif and predicted the failure of Khan’s recent calls for protest in August.
