Court rejects bail plea of QMobile’s top officer in tax evasion, smuggling case

KARACHI – A local court has rejected a bail application filed by a top official of a mobile phone company, QMobile, in mega smuggling and tax evasion case.

Urdu daily Khabrain said that the court has dismissed the plea of Admin Manager Muhammad Ammad during the hearing of the case, besides cancelling the bail of another officer of Digicom Electronics, Chief Finance Officer Babar Sultan. Both accused have been sent jail.

An investigation officer informed the court that accused Ammad during interrogation had confessed to the crime, adding that solid evidence has been gotten.

The daily added that Digicom’s CFO Babar Sultan and Director Zeeshan Yousaf have also been made accused in the FIR.

Accused Ammad during his confession revealed that both officials fled Dubai when the Pakistan Customs authorities recovered containers of smuggled phones. He added that Yousaf had also directed to conceal other phones in a house after the customs’ action.

It is important to mention here that the customs earlier this month raided a bungalow in Karachi’s Defence area on Saturday and seized over 80,000 smuggled cell phones.

According to Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), an investigation is being conducted against Digicom, QMobile under Money Laundering Act 2010. After completion of the probe, a case would be registered against the company.
