Accountability court postpones indictment of Shehbaz, Hamza in Ramzan Sugar Mills case

LAHORE – Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president and the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif and his son, Leader of the Opposition in Punjab Assembly Hamza Shehbaz appeared before an accountability court regarding an ongoing probe into the Ramzan Sugar Mills corruption reference on Wednesday.

The court was likely to frame charges against all accused persons in the case. However, the court accepted the plea of Shehbaz’s defence counsel and postponed indictment of the accused leaders in the reference until the next hearing.

Justice Syed Najamul Hassan presided over the hearing of the case while the prosecutor told the court that all accused persons were handed over two copies each of the reference.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) last month filed a reference against Shehbaz and Hamza alleging that the former chief minister of Punjab misused his authority by using public funds for the construction of a bridge to facilitate the Ramzan mills, owned by his sons.

Shehbaz and son Hamza, after attending the hearing of the case were allowed to leave the court.

Earlier on 14 February, the Lahore High Court granted bail to Shehbaz in the Ashiana Iqbal Housing scheme and Ramzan Sugar Mills cases.

On 18 February, the opposition leader has already been indicted in the Ashiana scheme case.

Yesterday (Tuesday), the LHC ordered the removal of Shehbaz Sharif’s name from the Exit Control List (ECL).

Former CM Punjab had filed the application in the LHC challenging the decision of the federal government to place his name on the no-fly list.

He was arrested by NAB in the probe on October 5, 2018, for alleged misuse of authority and involvement in the Ashiana Housing Scheme case.

His name was placed on the ECL in February. However, Information Minster Fawad Chaudhry has said that the LHC decision will be challenged in the Supreme Court.
