Pakistan-US talks on Afghan peace process begin in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD – Delegation-level talks between Pakistan and United States (US) have begun at the Foreign Office in Islamabad to discuss progress on Afghan reconciliation process, the Radio Pakistan reported.

The Pakistani delegation was led by Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua while, American delegation is being headed by US Special Representative for Afghanistan reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad.

“Tehmina Janjua held talks with US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation on efforts to promote peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan,” Foreign Office spokesperson Mohammad Faisal tweeted.

The US Special Representative for Afghanistan reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad also called on Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi. Both the dignitaries exchanged views on the Afghan peace process, current regional situation and the matters of mutual interests.

The Foreign Minister appreciated progress on intra-Afghan talks. He said Pakistan will continue to play its role in political reconciliation in Afghanistan. He said Peace in Afghanistan is in the best interest of the entire region including Pakistan.

Zalmay Khalilzad also apprised the Foreign Minister about the progress on Doha talks and details of his recent engagements regarding Afghan peace process.

The US Special Representative for Afghanistan reconciliation will also have separate meetings with the civil and military leadership during his visit to the country.
