KARACHI- Members of Sindh cabinet will deliberate policing powers of Rangers in the province in a crucial meeting under the chair of the chief minister Murad Ali Shah today (Saturday).
The meeting convened at 4 PM follows the expiry of special policing powers granted to Pakistan Rangers Sindh on April 14.
The Sindh government had approved a 90-day extension in Rangers’ special powers in Karachi in January. The notification granting powers to the paramilitary force took effect from January 16, 2017 and expired last week.
The Home Department of Sindh forwarded a summary of extension to Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah on April 5, which is pending approval. Political analysts opine that the PPP-led Sindh government wants to curtail the role of Rangers in the province, for which the summary has not been given a go-ahead by the executive head.
The federal cabinet had granted special powers to Rangers to start a targeted operation with the support of police against criminals involved in target killings and other illegal activities.
The Rangers operation was launched in September 2013 in Karachi.
