Pakistan Army asks India to ensure safety of census teams near LoC

RAWALPINDI – Pakistan Army officials have contacted their Indian counterparts through a hotline to notify the movement of civil and military enumerators near the Line of Control (LoC) as part of the ongoing census, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement on Tuesday.

The step was aimed at ensuring the safety and security of civil and military personnel following incidents of “unprovoked targeting and persistent ceasefire violations by the Indian Army”, the military’s media wing added.

The Indian officials were asked to inform their ground troops about the movement of census staff in areas close to the LoC.

The second phase of the census commenced on Tuesday in 87 Districts across the country and will be completed on May 25 2017, added the ISPR.

A census team comprising civil and army personnel visited Army House, Rawalpindi for “registration of necessary data”, the ISPR said.

With 118,000 enumerators from different departments accompanied by 175,000 army personnel, the country’s largest population census was launched on March 15 in 63 districts of the country after a delay of 19 years.
