Senate Chairman accepts Nehal Hashmi s application to withdraw resignation

ISLAMABAD – Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani on Wednesday accepted PML-N Senator Nehal Hashmi’s application to withdraw his resignation from Upper House.

Rabbani said that the Leader of the House Raja Zafarul Haq should be informed about the development in the matter.

According to the chairman’s ruling, the PML-N senator tendered his resignation stating that he was unable to perform as a lawmaker in the Senate “due to certain circumstances”.

Later, the Senate chairman directed him to appear in his chamber to testify whether he filed resignation voluntarily, but Hashmi could not come to the chamber and asked to postpone his meeting with the chairman.

On Tuesday, Hashmi met with Senate chairman in his chamber and filed another application seeking withdrawal of his tendered resignation.

In the application, he stated: “It is to bring to your kind notice that the resignation in question, had to be furnished under quite unusual circumstances. It now necessitates its immediate withdrawal as it was completely in under stressful atmosphere.”

Nehal Hashmi had submmited his resignation to the Senate chairman last week after a video surfaced on social media in which he was found threatening those are probing Sharif family’s assets.

Nehal Hashmi’s Outrageous Speech

Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) leader Nehal Hashmi came into the limelight on Wednesday when a video surfaced in which he can be seen threatening the judiciary in a veiled reference.

The video that went viral on the internet shows a disgruntled Senator Nehal warning rivals and ‘some honourable officials associated with top institutions’ of dire consequences if they continued their concerns with the accountability of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Party Membership Revoked

Hashmi’s party membership was revoked on May 31 after the prime minister house took notice of his speech.

“A show-cause notice has also been issued to the senator,” said Dr Asif Kirmani, the adviser to Prime Minister on Political Affairs.

“We have also demanded his (Hashmi’s) resignation from Senate,” State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb said, in a statement.

Contempt Notice

The court conducted hearing of the case and served a contempt of court notice on the PML-N’s Senator for his threatening speech that surfaced on Wednesday.

The apex court sought Hashmi’s reply regarding the contempt of court notice by Monday besides appointing Attorney General Ashtar Ausaf as a prosecutor.

During the last hearing, Justice Ejaz Afzal remarked that the top judiciary knew what it was doing adding that the Joint Investigation Team currently investigating offshore assets of Sharif family was formulated by the Supreme court.

“No one can scare us,” remarked Justice Ejaz Afzal.

Justice Aijaz Ul Ahsan expressed that the members of cabinets issued threats during the proceedings of the Panama case as well.
