ISLAMABAD – The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday declared two petitions challenging Nawaz Sharif’s GT Road journey to Lahore ‘unmaintainable’.
The petition was filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s lawyer Usman Saeed Basra and in his judgment, reserved a day earlier, Justice Aamer Farooq termed it unmaintainable.
The petitioner argued that the rally was an effort to undermine the authority of the Supreme Court (SC) and pressurize the accountability court which would hear the National Accountability Bureau’s references against the Sharif family.
The petitioner contended that Nawaz Sharif — who was disqualified by the five-member bench of apex court — along with his party was maligning the apex court by terming the ouster a ‘conspiracy’.
To incite public anger, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Nawaz have decided to lead a public rally from Islamabad to Lahore on August 9, stated the petition.
As per the petitioner, this act is tantamount to subverting and undermining the authority of the judiciary and thus an attack on the independence of the judiciary.

The petitioner petitioned to the court to direct federal government, ICT administration and Punjab government to stop this rally.
Another petition seeking to place the names of members of Sharif family on Exit Control List, in a bid to stop them from going abroad was also dismissed by the Islamabad High Court.
Meanwhile, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has started his journey towards Lahore with his party workers and law makers.
According to rough estimates and party sources, the road show would complete in three days as the party head would address workers at scattered places along the route.
