LAHORE – The provincial government has allowed all private and government schools to revert to their normal timing, 8:15am, from today (Wednesday) after the intensity of smog decreased with winter rains.
In view of spell of smog earlier this month, the Punjab School Education Department had ordered all schools in the province to change their timings to 9AM to 2:30PM.
As the dense fog engulfed most of the parts in the province, the visibility had reduced to an extent that citizens were unable to carry out their routine work timely.
The smog also caused several road accidents in which more than 15 people were killed. The situation also pushed the administration to close sections of the motorway early in the morning. Flight operations were also disrupted due to lower visibility.
Lahore High Court Chief Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah had also taken up the issue of smog and sought a report on the measures taken by the government to tackle the situation. He had also asked the environment secretary to submit an action plan regarding tree plantation.
Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif has written a letter to Captain Amarinder Singh, the CM of Indian Punjab, seeking a “regional cooperation arrangement” to combat the issue of smog which has caused difficulties on both sides of the border.
