NAB court testifies 3 more witnesses in Al-Azizia, Flagship Investment cases

ISLAMABAD – An accountability court in Islamabad on Wednesday recorded statement of three prosecution witnesses in Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Flagship Investments supplementary references against Sharif family.

Judge Mohammad Bashir took up the supplementary corruption references filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in the light of Panamagate verdict. Accused former prime minister Nawaz Sharif also appeared before the court.

It is to mention here that the NAB had filed three interim corruption references regarding London properties, Al-Azizia Steel Mills, Flagship Investment and other offshore companies against members of Sharif family.

Former prime minister, his sons – Hasan and Hussain – have been nominated in all the three reference while Maryam Nawaz and Captain (retd) have been made accused in only Avenfield properties case.

The anti-graft watchdog recently filed supplementary references in all three cases – Avenfiled properties, Al-Azizia Steel Mills, Flagship Investment and other offshore companies.

Sharif’s sons -Hassan and Hussain – have also been named as accused in the references, however, due to continued absence both have been declared proclaimed offenders.

The NAB court recorded statements of Norin Shehzadi, branch manager of Standard Chartered Bank, Wapda Town Lahore, financial expert Sher Khan and another person.

Shehzadi informed the court about the transactions of Hussain Nawaz from 2010 to 2017. She added that the documents, which have been provided to the court, were not written by her or in her presence. She said that Sharif opened an account with her bank in 2009 as chief executive officer of Chaudhry Sugar Mills.

Financial expert Khan said that he had prepared a comparison report on the transactions of two banks and submitted it to the NAB.

Responding to a question by defence counsel, the witness said that Irfan Mangi, who was member of the Panamagaete JIT, was working as director general NAB, Rawalpindi when he prepared the report.

At last hearing of Avenfield supplementary reference, the court turned down Panamagte Joint Investigation Team (JIT) head Wajid Zia’s plea to make the entire investigation report part of the record in corruption reference against Sharif family.
