Lifetime disqualification verdict recalls dictator s era: Maryam Nawaz

SIALKOT – Maryam Nawaz Sharif, a daughter of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, on Friday came down hard on the verdict, announced by the Supreme Court today in disqualification period case.

Addressing a social media convention of Pakistan Muslime League-Nawaz (PML-N) in Sialkot, the former first daughter said that the verdict has recalled the dark days of dictatorship, adding that his father was declared disqualified four times in the single case.

She added that such decisions were empowering the embattled Nawaz Sharif. Disqualification is not for life, she said, adding that the decision will remain until these judges were in the court.

“Nawaz was disqualified for life; he was barred from heading the PML-N,” she said, adding, “But he still rules people’s heart.”

Referring to former president Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf, Maryam said the dictator used to say that Nawaz will not come back and today he himself was living outside the country. In the past, Nawaz was charged with hijacking a plane but not punished over corruption, she added.

Today, the top court has unanimously announced that the disqualification under Article 62 (1)(f) of the Constitution was for a lifetime, sealing the political career of former Premier Nawaz Sharif and PTI’s former Secretary General Jahangir Tareen for life.

The much-awaited verdict was written and announced by Justice Umer Atta Bandial in courtroom no. 1 while Justice Azmat Saeed also wrote an additional note in the judgment.

The five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar and comprising Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed, Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Sajjad Ali Shah voted 5-0 in favour of lifetime disqualification, though the proposal before the apex court was to reduce the embargo for 8 years.
