About 23,000 having fake CNICs identified: Nisar

ISLAMABAD – Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Monday said that stern action against foreigners holding fake Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) would begin after August 31.

Addressing a press conference, Nisar warned foreigners holding fake CNICs to surrender their cards before the end of the month, adding that a drive against such people was underway. He said after the deadline, fake ID card holders would be arrested, sent to jail and also repatriated to their mother countries.

The Interior Minister said, “About 23,000 fake ID cards have been identified. Around 224,000 CNICs have been re-verified in the first month.”

Nisar also announced a Rs. 10,000 cash prize for anyone who identified people with fake CNICs.

In the last week of May, the interior ministry launched a drive for re-verification of CNICs of all Pakistani citizens and warned fake ID card holders with punishment of up to seven years in jail.

The Interior Minister said that 25 million families would be targeted in the exercise to make the verification process easier.

Commenting on the extension of Rangers’ powers in Sindh, the minister said the Sindh government’s delay in extending the paramilitary force’s powers was tantamount to putting their lives in danger.
