ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Imran Khan will meet the Afghan Taliban leader in an attempt to push forward the Afghan peace process, disclosed the special assistant to Imran Khan on political affairs, Naeemul Haq.
“Imran Khan will meet the Taliban leader soon for the peaceful resolution of the Afghan crisis,” Radio Pakistan quoted Haq as saying on Wednesday.
According to the report, the Afghan government has also expressed its willingness for a meeting between PM Imran and the Taliban leader, though an official date in this regard is awaited.
The announcement comes weeks ahead of a planned meeting between US President, Donald Trump and Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Pakistan’s Premier is scheduled to fly to Washington on July 20 in all-important official visit in which regional situation especially the Afghan Peace Process would come under discussion.
Pakistan recently hosted top Afghan leaders for ‘Lahore Process’ conference in which Islamabad reiterated its resolve to play its part for putting an end to the Afghan war.
Prime Minister Imran Khan, as well as the military leadership in the country, have repeatedly called for a political solution to the Afghan conflict instead of a military manoeuvre.
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani also visited Islamabad recently and called on Prime Minister Imran Khan wherein discussions were held regarding the Afghan Peace Process.
Washington seems anxious in ending the conflict as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also paid a surprise visit to Afghanistan recently and met senior leaders to discuss ways for sustainable peace.
