Senate rejects bill to make PIA public limited company
ISLAMABAD (Staff Report) - Senate, the Upper House of Parliament, on Friday rejected a bill moved by Minister for Climate Change Zahid Hamid under title "The Pakistan International Airlines Corporation [Conversion] Bill, 2015."

The bill provided necessary legislative framework for setting up of the Pakistan International Airlines Corporation into a public limited company.

The House also passed a resolution calling upon the government to provide funds on priority basis for the refurbishment and rehabilitation of the Federal Lodges in Islamabad.

Responding to a calling attention notice moved by Senator Farhatullah Babar regarding European Union's recent report about situation of human rights in Pakistan, Minister for Human Rights Zahid Hamid said that 60 measures in different areas have been suggested in action plan including legislation reforms, administration of justice, protection of women rights, rights of children, jail reforms, media awareness, international treaty implementation, strengthening of human rights institutions and others.

He informed Senate that the government has recently announced a National Action Plan for promotion of human rights in the country. There was a chapter on speedy and inexpensive justice in the manifest of PML-N, he added.

He said the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has directed the concerned quarters to implement on this. He said the government is fully active to this situation and is making efforts to address all the issues relating to human rights. He said 982 missing persons have been recovered.

He said there were some positive things in the European Union's recent report regarding human rights in Pakistan but the mover highlighted only the negative aspects.

The Upper House's session was later on adjourned till Monday 3:00 p.m.
