LAHORE – Admitting for hearing a petition seeking a treason case against Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief and former PM Nawaz Sharif, the Lahore High Court on Wednesday directed the Defence Police to submit a report on the matter by next Monday, October 9.
A resident of Lahore, in his petition, contended that the deposed PM during his rally from Islamabad to Lahore criticised the judiciary and passed inappropriate remarks against judges over his disqualification by the top court in July this year.
The petitioner maintained that Nawaz had also hurled allegations against the members of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) formed by the Supreme Court to probe into Sharif’s offshore assets, thereby targeting state institutions – a move tantamount to committing treason.
On July 28, while announcing the Panama case verdict, a five-member bench of the Supreme Court disqualified Nawaz Sharif as Prime Minister of Pakistan for failing to declare a salary, which he had not withdrawn as an executive of Dubai-based company, as an asset when filing his nomination papers in 2013.
The following month, Nawaz kicked off a defiant procession from Islamabad to Lahore during which he claimed: “the people of Pakistan reject his disqualification”.
