LAHORE – A female leopard who was imported from South Africa a week ago died on Sunday morning, confirm officials.
The three-year-old leopard’s postmortem will be conducted by the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences and after that, the real cause of the death would be examined. “We have sent samples to the university and the complete report would be available on Monday,” Deputy Director Lahore Zoo Tanvir Ahmed told Daily Pakistan.
On October 30, 2017, four big cats including two white lions and a pair of leopards were brought from Africa. “It is possible the leopard was unable to adjust here and expired,” he added.
According to the agreement, it is the duty of the contractor to look after the animal (dead or alive) for one month starting from the date of purchase. So, Mr Ahmed explained, “we have handed over the body to the contractor.”
All four animals cost Lahore Zoo of Rs10.8 million, shared the official.

Director General of Wildlife & Parks Punjab, Khalid Ayaz Khan, has said the age of the male leopard was four years and two days while the female was three years, two months and twenty-five days at the time of purchase.
In August this year, a lion cub died after months of severe dehydration, sparking outrage from visitors and animal rights groups.

Five-month Angela and Chris, a male lion cub, was adopted by Punjab University during a declaration earlier this year.
Angela, having dehydration along with gastro, was facing the serious challenge to maintain its body temperature.
According to Lahore Zoo Veterinary Doctor, the lioness was kept under observation and intensive care and good feed was also good but failed to recover enough strength.
Rights activists say animals and their children suffer illness most of the times due to deliberate negligence and mismanagement of Zoo staff.
