ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government recently dealt with massive protests by the religious party bringing them to an end through dialogue but there is opposition among the party ranks over signing an agreement with agitators.
The ruling party and Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) reached a five-point agreement on Friday after the agitators choked the country for three days, causing closure of educational institutes and markets.
The leaders of the party marked it as a success of the government to peacefully resolve the issue without using the force, however, a minister of the party opposed her party’s reconciliation approach on the matter.
Shireen Mazari, Minister for Human Rights, took to the Twitter raising voice against appeasement. Taking aim at her own party, she said: “It is unfortunate we don’t study history – appeasement historically never works as Chamberlain’s Munich appeasement towards Nazis showed”.

Citing an example from Europe history, she said: “Appeasement to avoid “bloodshed” in a war-weary Europe led to massive bloodshed & destruction in the form of WW II”.
She went on to say that conciliating with “non-state actors” damaged the very concept of democratic peaceful protest. She wrote, Appeasement to avoid bloodshed sends a dangerous msg to non-state actors & undermines the very concept of democratic peaceful protest.
The minister added that the state has to enforce “Rule of Law, Constitution & standby state institutions esp [especially] when they are targeted”.

After lampooning the federal government, Mazari said that she believed in Prime Minister Imran Khan to deliver on his commitment to rule of law.
She posed trust in incumbent premier ‘not just in present situation but also on issues like Enforced Disappearances’.

Mazari’s stance, despite being a part of the ruling regime, is being hailed widely on social media.
