PM Imran to chair first NSC meeting today

ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Imran Khan has called a meeting of the National Security Council today to review the law and order situation in the country, local media reported.

The prime minister and his team returned to Pakistan on Monday after wrapping the crucial official visit to China.

It is expected that the premier will take the top security body into confidence over his first visit to Beijing where he met Chinese President Xi Jinping, Prime Minister Li Keqiang and Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

The meeting will also discuss the prevailing security situation in the country following the acquittal of Asia Bibi, an accused of blasphemy,  by the Supreme Court last week.

The top court on October 31 ordered Bibi’s immediate release stating that she could not be found guilty in the case. The verdict sparked protests by religious parties causing road blocks and closure of educational institutions and markets.

The participants are also likely to discuss the Pak-Afghan border security situation, among other matters.

Top military leadership, including Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Zubair Mahmood Hayat, will attend the NSC meeting.
